Rahul Chopra is currently a senior Electrical Engineering major at George Mason University and is on path to graduate in May 2014. The team is divided into three major groups: Mechanics, Signal Processing, and Control Engineering. Rahul’s responsibility is to take on the role of a “Control Engineer” and handle all aspects that are associated with it. He is responsible for programming the microcontroller (ATMega2560) used in this project. The control part of the project is a complex task because a user can move his or her arm in multiple directions of freedom. This project aims to control one aspect of freedom (flexing and straightening of the arm), which will be done through careful analysis of the amplified and filtered EMG signal going into the microcontroller. Then the microcontroller will tell the motors how to react to such an EMG signal through algorithms and EMG debouncing. A “Calibration Mode” will be implemented through the control side as well, to pick up the max amplitudes of the EMG signal (the user will be prompted that a certain amount of force will be placed on the arm, and the user will be asked to try to resist the forces on the arm, then the amplitude will be sent to the microcontroller for analysis) and normalize this value, with every value after calibration mode being compared to the max amplitude achieved through calibration mode. Therefore, collaboration is required among both Scott Oshiro (“Signal Processing” Role) and Luis Asencios Reynoso (“Mechanics” Role) to have a successful project.
Rahul is also the Financial Manager within the team, who is responsible for figuring out what is needed to be bought and how to allocate the money within the group. Anything bought within the team must first be talked over with him to decide whether it is necessary to purchase certain items.
